She makes happiness look easy. It isn't.

Dear Joy Seeker,
I came across a quote the other day:
“It is easy to be heavy. It’s hard to be light.”
It got me thinking about something we don’t give nearly enough credit to.
The invisible work of being a joyful person.
You know those people who walk into a room and somehow make everything feel a little lighter?
The ones who find humour in difficult situations, who lift others up, who manage to see possibilities where everyone else sees problems?
We tend to say things like, “Oh, she’s just naturally positive!” or “He’s always been such a happy person!”, as if joy is something they were born with.
A lucky personality trait.
But what if we’re overlooking all the work that goes into it?
The daily mental fitness, the conscious reframing, the gratitude practices, the decision not to let one frustrating moment ruin an entire day.
Of course, some people naturally lean towards optimism more than others.
But being joyful is also something we practise.
Just like we train our bodies to become stronger, we can train our minds to become better at noticing the good, finding perspective and choosing how we respond to life’s challenges.
And sometimes that training is HARD.
Especially when you’re sick, tired, disappointed or simply having one of those days when absolutely nothing seems to go your way.
So here’s my invitation for this Monday: give yourself some credit for the effort it takes to be joyful and give some credit to the people in your life who make things feel lighter.
Because behind that beautiful energy, there’s often a lot more intention, resilience and inner work than we realise.
🌟 3 Ideas for Creating More Joy This Week
1. Compliment the sunshine people - tell someone who consistently lifts your spirits how much you appreciate their energy.
2. Be the person who brings good news - share something uplifting instead of another complaint.
3. Choose your attitude before your inbox chooses it for you - ask yourself every morning: “How do I want to show up today?”
📚 2 Inspiring Resources
1. Calendar:Optimistic October - Action for Happiness - their October 2026 calendar offers one small action each day to help you practise realistic optimism. Perfect timing if you need a little nudge to start practising your joy muscle.
2. Podcast:The Happiness Lab: Finding the Magic in Everyday Life - I loved the reminder in this episode that we don’t always need extraordinary experiences to feel extraordinary joy. The episode explores how we can rediscover the wonder and curiosity we had as children and find a little more magic in the ordinary moments of our everyday lives.
🤔 This Week's Reflection Question
1. Do I give myself enough credit for the effort I put into maintaining a positive mindset?
Whatever the answer is, make sure you take note of that.
With joy,
Irina
